Memphis: Just What You’ve Been Waiting For!
Things To Do, My Tennessee Week
A recent trip to Memphis showed me what I’d been missing since my last vacay during my adolescence. Upon arriving into the city, I realized this wasn’t the place I’d remembered at 13, and that was a very good thing.
Memphis has always been one of those city’s you make plans to visit eventually, but perhaps you should be a bit more proactive and mark your calendars for…this weekend (or sooner if you so desire). The historic city has everything from rockin’ live music, finger-lickin’-good restaurants and entertainment for miles.
Kick up your feet and relax at the Peabody Hotel and enjoy the lavish accommodations and amenities the hotel has to offer. You’ve often heard of the famed duck march that takes place every day, but why not see it firsthand? The immaculate lobby hosts thousands of hotel guests and visitors each year to watch the birds uniformly waddle down the red carpet, celebrities in their own right. Be sure to arrive early to stake your claim for the best picture-worthy spot.
Visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and you’ll understand why Memphis is known as “Soulville USA.” Hear the stories of musical giants such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, the Bar-Kays, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Ike & Tina Turner and hundreds of others. The award-winning introductory film clues you in to the magnitude of the record label’s contribution to music while the authentic 100-year-old Mississippi Delta church located inside the museum explains the gospel roots of the soul music genre we all know and love. The museum features more than 2,000 exhibits, videos, stage costumes, photographs and instruments used to record the Stax sound.
Answer the call of the neon sign blazing out front at the Arcade Restaurant on S. Main Street. This restaurant opened in 1919, making it Memphis’s oldest restaurant. The restaurant is a part of the city’s make up, serving up crowd favorites such as mouth-watering sweet potato pancakes, create-your-own pizzas and Elvis’s favorite, the fried peanut butter ‘n banana sandwich.
And these are just a few things Memphis has to offer! The Tennessee charm varies from across the state, from Covington to Pulaski to Maryville. It’s time to hit the road and see it all for yourself!
