Tennessee is the place to be this weekend!
Things To Do, My Tennessee Weekend
Do you feel that? It’s the excitement in the air from all the action-packed, family-friendly activities to do this weekend! Here’s the latest scoop:
Gatlinburg celebrates Independence Day in a unique way by hosting America’s first 4th of July parade at midnight. Yes, you heard it correctly. Midnight. Right in the foothills of the beautiful Smoky Mountains, thousands of spectators are expected to turn out for the early-morning event. If you’re in the area, be sure to check out the vintage military vehicles, decorated floats and large contingent of armed services personnel that will be featured in the parade.
Head to Beale Street to commemorate the 4th of July holiday in a soulful way. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to Memphis’s “Red Hot & Blues Celebration” to hear a free concert in Handy Park at 6 p.m. This evening-time event is sure to be fun for the whole family. A booming fireworks display begins at 10 p.m.
The Music City’s celebration of Independence Day has been extended to last all weekend long with free, live music concerts at Riverfront Park Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. So not only will you have the chance to witness one of the largest fireworks displays in the south, but you’ll get to celebrate the General Jackson Showboat’s 25-year anniversary, which coincides with this weekend’s holiday activities, at the same time! The anniversary celebration kicks off July 2 with a free concert by country artist Chuck Wicks and $8 excursion cruises on the General Jackson. The July 4 party continues on Saturday, July 3 with a free concert by country artist Julianne Hough in honor of first responders. Activities will begin at noon and the official concert will start at 8 p.m. on the Riverfront stage. On Sunday, July 4, country music star Trace Adkins will headline the “Music City July 4th: Let Freedom Sing!” concert beginning at 7 p.m. in Riverfront Park. The show line-up will also include Julianne Hough, Jaci Velasquez, and the Grammy-winning Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
And for a cool underground experience, visit Cumberland Caverns in McMinnville. This year marks the 200-year discovery anniversary. To make visiting the caverns a bit easier, free admission will be offered for children every Friday through August. Additionally, the caverns will offer special historic adventure tours every Saturday in July. Be prepared to climb 20’ ladders, walk over and under rocks and sit in the same place Aaron Higginbotham, who first discovered the cave, sat 200 years ago!
You definitely don’t want to be anywhere else this weekend! Have a happy Tennessee weekend!
